Jonathan sarà Dracula per una serie televisiva di 10 puntate.
Lo ha annunciato la rete americana NBC che ha comprato le puntate senza neanche aspettare la puntata pilota.
Il presidente della NBC è Robert Greenblatt , che è stato produttore sia di Elvis che dei Tudor. E' una squadra che finora ha funzionato. Quindi speriamo in bene: non c'è 2 senza 3!!!!!

Il fascinoso attore irlandese sarà il protagonista di una nuova serie tv incentrata sul vampiro più celebre del cinema e della letteratura, in viaggio nella capitale britannica per cercare vendetta e... amore. "In tempi di Twilight e True Blood e di tutte le altre storie contemporanee, abbiamo pensato di tornare all'originale". Così Jonathan Rhys Meyers ha commentato la recente notizia, che lo vede confermato come protagonista di una nuovissima serie tv dedicata a Dracula, il padrino di tutti i vampiri letterari e cinematografici.

L'annuncio a questo punto è ufficiale: l'attore irlandese reciterà nei panni del personaggio creato da Bram Stoker all'interno dei dieci episodi di questa produzione targata NBC e realizzata in collaborazione con Sky Living. Del resto, Rhys Meyers ha già dimostrato di trovarsi a suo agio nelle produzioni televisive con la serie tv I Tudor.

La serie seguirà Dracula in viaggio in incognito nella Londra vittoriana, con il pretesto di voler "introdurre il progresso nella capitale britannica", ma con la reale intenzione di cercare una sanguinosa vendetta. Peccato che, per quanto i suoi piani non prevedano l'amore, a complicare le cose sopraggiunga un'affascinante fanciulla che sembra la reincarnazione della sua moglie defunta.

Le riprese cominceranno entro la fine dell'anno, ed è probabile che a breve sopraggiungeranno altre novità riguardanti il cast e la produzione. Non ci resta che stare in fiduciosa attesa, perché di sicuro seguiranno a breve nuovi, succosi aggiornamenti sul cast e la produzione.

L’NBC punta decisamente sull’horror per la prossima stagione. Ieri vi avevamo parlato delle novità sulla serie Hannibal , e oggi vi segnaliamo un nuovo progetto che minaccia di inquietare le vostre serate: si tratta di Dracula, serie tratta dall’omonimo romanzo di Bram Stoker.

Per ora si sa che Bob Greenblatt, presidente della NBC, ha confermato di aver dato l’ok per la prima stagione, di 10 puntate. Ma non solo. A dare il volto al protagonista sarà niente meno che Jonathan Rhys Meyers che, abbandonata la corona di Enrico VIII nella serie sui Tudor, è pronto ad indossare una meno regale dentiera da vampiro.

C’è da dire che l’Italia non porta una particolare fortuna a Rhys Meyers in quanto ad ascolti. Basti vedere il mezzo flop della serie i Tudor, a mio avviso eccessivamente sottovalutata dal pubblico nostrano. Co-produttrice delle 10 puntate di Dracula sarà poi la Carnival Films, la stessa che si era occupata del clamoroso successo di Downtown Abbey. Ancora una volta si può tranquillamente parlare di un successo mancato qui da noi, anche grazie ad una collocazione oraria su Rete 4 discutibile perchè nettamente sfavorevole.



Presagi di sventura a parte, possiamo dire che i vampiri ce li siamo subiti in tutte le salse dall’uscita di Twilight in poi. Piccoli e grandi freak assetati di sangue ci hanno fatto compagnia dalla tv con True Blood al cinema con Dark Shadows, per citare due degli esempi più originali e riusciti (o comunque meno imbarazzanti). Cosa ci proporranno stavolta gli autori della serie per darci l’impressione di non stare a guardare sempre la stessa storia?

Il vampiro protagonista di Dracula (che avrà la faccia ma soprattutto gli occhi di Jonathaan Rhys Meyers, ribadisco) arriverà a Londra spacciandosi per un imprenditore americano che vuole introdurre la scienza moderna nella società vittoriana. In realtà il vampiro si trova nella capitale inglese per cercare vendetta contro chi secoli prima gli ha rovinato la vita, trasformandolo in quello che ora è. (Gente longeva, comunque)

Ma visto che un vampiro single non può esistere (hanno cercato di farcelo capire tutti dal cinema alla tv) pare che i propositi di vendetta del protagonista verranno messi a dura prova dall’amore per una fanciulla. Fanciulla di cui il vampiro si innamora perdutamente perchè sembra essere la reincarnazione di sua moglie defunta (sempre secoli prima).

Jonathan Rhys Meyers to star in US Dracula series



The former star of The Tudors, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, is to play the infamous Count Dracula in a US version of Bram Stoker's classic tale.

The US TV network, NBC, has ordered ten episodes of the drama series.

Rhys Meyers is best known for his roles in Bend it Like Beckham, The Tudors, and the TV film, Elvis.

NBC bosses said Dracula - set in the Victorian era - will stay true to the classic story's time period, but with a "look to the future".

According to the Hollywood Reporter, it will be set in London in the 1890s, and see Dracula lead a double life as an American businessman interested in bringing modern science to Victorian society.

However, his plan to exact revenge on those who ruined his life centuries earlier is derailed when he falls in love.

Based on a script by Cole Haddon, it will be co-produced by Gareth Neame who was responsible for ITV1's hit period drama Downton Abbey.

It is not yet known when Dracula will air on US television, but NBC said production will begin later this year.

Entertainment chairman at NBC, Bob Greenblatt, who was involved in casting Rhys Meyers as King Henry VIII in the historical drama, The Tudors, said the new series would bring a Tudors sensibility to a piece of classic literature.

"In the world of Twilight and True Blood and all the contemporised stories, we thought we'd go back to the original," he said.

The new US version of Dracula comes as NBC discusses another supernatural-type drama in its remake of The Munsters.

The network previewed the pilot for the show - called Mockingbird Lane in reference to the Munster family address - at Comic Con last month.

It will star Eddie Izzard as the Dracula-esque figure, Grandpa Munster, and is expected to be darker and edgier, while retaining plenty of humour.

The Irish actor, Jonathan Rhys Meyers has appeared in a number of successful TV and films, including the mini-series, Elvis, in 2005.

His portrayal of Elvis Presley won him a Golden Globe award and an Emmy nomination.

He was also nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the young King Henry VIII broadcast on the BBC from 2007 to 2011.

In 2006, he appeared in Mission: Impossible III with Tom Cruise, and more recently starred alongside John Travolta in From Paris with Love.

Dracula torna in tv: una riflessione sulla nuova serie NBC

Il ritorno sul piccolo schermo del Vampiro per eccellenza porta con sé novità che potrebbero anticipare cambiamenti nell'industria tv americana.



E' di qualche giorno fa l'annuncio che NBC Universal e Sky Living hanno approvato la produzione di Dracula, serie tv di 10 episodi dedicata al vampiro più famoso della storia.

Il ruolo del protagonista è andato a Jonathan Rhys Meyers (I Tudor), che con il suo Enrico VIII ha già dimostrato sia di saper incarnare personaggi moralmente ambigui, sia — meno importante ma l'occhio vuole la sua parte — di fare una discreta figura in costume d'epoca. Ancora nessuna novità sulla protagonista femminile e sui comprimari.

Questo il comunicato di NBC: "1890, Londra: il conte Dracula arriva in città presentandosi come un imprenditore americano desideroso di portare la scienza moderna nella società vittoriana, ma in realtà il suo scopo è vendicarsi delle persone che secoli prima gli hanno rovinato la vita. Solo un elemento imprevisto rischia di rovinare il suo piano: Dracula si innamora di una donna che sembra essere la reincarnazione della sua defunta moglie."



Praticamente il Dracula di Bram Stoker (1992, diretto da Francis Ford Coppola), incontra Il Conte di Montecristo. Chi ha visto il film di Coppola noterà subito che la premessa della serie è molto simile: pur basandosi sul libro originale di Stoker molto più fedelmente di tanti altri adattamenti, Coppola inventa una storia d'amore tra i personaggi di Dracula e di Mina Harker e fa di lei la reincarnazione della prima moglie del vampiro, rendendo questo amore impossibile il cardine attorno al quale ruota la trama. Il romanzo Il conte di Montecristo invece è l'esempio principe delle storie in cui il protagonista, sotto mentite spoglie, torna per cercare vendetta contro i suoi aguzzini.



Visto il costante successo del fantastico era curioso che nessuno avesse ancora avuto l'idea di riportare in tv "il" vampiro per definizione — e chi pensa che il trend dei vampiri sia in calo non ha visto i dati di ascolto di The Vampire Diaries su CW. Per tacere di Twilight.

Balza all'occhio l'unico elemento veramente originale della premessa, ovvero l'idea che Dracula voglia portare a Londra la "scienza moderna" (intesa forse come modernità in senso lato?): l'idea che sia il testimone di un'altra epoca a promuovere il progresso è intrigante e apre a possibilità interessanti: come verrà accolta la modernità nel cuore dell'epoca vittoriana? Come verrà accolto Dracula? L'archetipo del vampiro funziona sempre meglio quando il confine tra mostro e normale sfuma, quando il "diverso" si scontra con l'aberrazione nascosta dentro l'uomo comune. Non a caso è una premessa su cui Joss Wheadon ha costruito sopra una carriera.



Merita una riflessione la struttura della serie: 10 episodi sono un taglio da canale via cavo come HBO o Starz, non comune in un network in chiaro come NBC, che normalmente lavora con format di 22-23 ep. (una stagione completa) e più raramente di 13 ep. (mezza stagione). L'iniziativa sembra confermare quanto anticipato da alcuni critici americani, secondo cui l'esempio positivo dato dalle produzioni via cavo si affermerà come trend anche in chiaro, portando a investire il budget in produzioni più brevi ma di alta qualità. Resta la domanda su come verranno coperte le settimane rimaste vacanti dal cambio di formato: altre fiction, avendo così due serie tv da 10 episodi ciascuna dove prima ce n'era solo una lunga il doppio? O reality show, notoriamente meno costosi di una fiction e piuttosto lucrativi?

E' un autore molto stimato e la notizia è stata accolta con molto interesse.

Back in July it was announced that NBC would revive Dracula in a new series. NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt is finally dropping more details about the show.

We no longer have to wonder when the new series will hit the network, as Crave Online reports that the show is currently in production to air in the fall 2013 season. Greenblatt also revealed that while the show is based on the Bram Stoker novel, there will be plenty of original elements. He said, “It’s great to tap into the pre-existing title and that basic story but that’s a pretty thin story. It’s going to be over I think before our first season is over. They’ve already invented new stuff that has nothing to do with Bram Stoker. Like any show, you build it as you go.”

Other sources of inspiration for the show include Vlad the Impaler, the Ottoman empire, and the turn of the century.

NBC’s been rather quiet on the front of its upcoming straight-to-series adaptation ‘Dracula,’ little known other than ‘The Tudors’ star Jonothan Rhys-Meyers would take the title role for a series helmed by ‘Carnivale’ creator Dan Knauf. Now, new reports have emerged that recent (and future) ‘Arrow‘ guest star Jessica De Gouw has joined the production in the role of the series’ female lead Mina, but why have ‘Dracula’ details been in the crypt for so long?

Fans of Aussie newcomer Jessica De Gouw’s piercing, blue-eyed ‘Arrow’ appearance as iconic DC character Helena Bertinelli (The Huntress) may be out of luck for the forseeable future, as The Hollywood Reporter says De Gouw has joined NBC’s straight-to-series ‘Dracula’ as the female lead.

Set in the 1890s and described as a cross between ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and ‘The Tudors,’ ‘Dracula’ finds the titular character (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) arriving in London under the guise of an American entrepreneur claiming that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. Instead, he seeks revenge on the people who destroyed his life centuries earlier, while falling in love with a woman who appears to be the reincarnation of his dead wife.

De Gouw will take the role of said woman, now called “Mina,” the only woman studying to be a doctor at University College in London. Further reports describe the character as forward-thinking, clever and independent, more comfortable at a bohemian party than sipping tea in a drawing room.

The project, created by Tony Krantz, former HBO films president Colin Callender and writer/executive producer Cole Haddon was originally bought by NBC in January 2012 with a “script-to-series” commitment. Most likely debut dates put ‘Dracula’ somewhere in 2013.

The series, which bypassed the traditional pilot stage, takes place in the 1890s and finds Dracula (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) living a double life in London as an American businessman interested in bringing modern science to Victorian society. But his true plan -- to exact revenge on those who burdened him centuries ago -- is derailed when he falls in love with Mina (Arrow's Jessica DeGouw), who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.

Smurfit, whose credits include roles in About a Boy, The Beach and Irish drama The Clinic, will play Lady Jayne, a fashion-forward graceful and beautiful woman instantly attracted to Dracula who pursues him.

Smurfit joins a cast that also includes Merlin's Katie McGrath and Game of Thrones' Nonso Anozie, who play Mina's best friend Lucy Westenra and Allan Grayson's (aka Dracula) loyal confidante.

Based on a script by co-exec producer Cole Haddon, Dracula will be exec produced by former HBO Films president Colin Callendar for Playground, Tony Krantz (24, Sports Night) for Flame Ventures and Gareth Neame (Downton Abbey) for Carnival Films, a division of NBCUniversal International Television Production, Dan Knauf (Carnivale) and Universal Television. Sky's Anne Mensah, head of drama, will serve as commissioning editor.

Smurfit is repped by UTA, United Agents, Lisa Richards, The Collective and Felker Toczek. NBC is eyeing Dracula for fall 2013.
